The Rehoboth Beach Patrol was founded in 1921 by Benjamin F. Shaw and the Red Cross, starting with a team of just 2 guards. Over the decades, the patrol has grown in size and stature, becoming an integral part of the Rehoboth Beach community. In 1996, a group of former lifeguards, including Bill Vernon, T.C. Coveleski, Kent Buckson, Herb Miller, Pete Hartsock, and Andy Walsh, came together to establish the Rehoboth Beach Patrol Alumni Association.

On July 4th, the association holds the Dave Reynolds Biathlon, a memorial event that includes a race and awards a scholarship to a guard who exemplifies the spirit of Dave Reynolds, a beloved former member of the patrol.
