The Pismo Beach Junior Lifeguard Program: Empowering Youth in Coastal Safety

The Pismo Beach Junior Lifeguard Program is a unique and challenging aquatic program designed to educate community youth about safe ocean recreation. This comprehensive program focuses on teaching fundamental ocean swimming techniques, water safety, lifeguarding, surf rescue, ocean swimming, surfing, care and handling of ocean rescue equipment, CPR, first aid, and marine life studies.

Program Overview

The Pismo Beach Junior Lifeguard Program is open to youth ages 9-17, with participants required to be of age by July 31, 2024. The program consists of two 3-week sessions, with the first session running from June 17 to July 5, 2024, and the second session from July 8 to July 26, 2024. The program runs Monday through Friday, from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm, with all activities taking place on the beach in front of the Sandcastle Hotel.

Enrollment and Cost

The cost of the Pismo Beach Junior Lifeguard Program is $394.00 per session, or $788 for both sessions per participant. Registration and payment for the 2024 program are now closed. To participate, prospective candidates must pass a basic swim test of 100 yards at the Sinsheimer Pool (900 Southwood Drive, San Luis Obispo).

Ocean Safety

Participants learn about coastal currents, swells, aquatic life, and self-rescue techniques to ensure their safety in the ocean.

Water Activities

The program provides instruction and practice in various water-based activities, such as open water swimming, paddle-boarding, body surfing, body boarding, surfboarding, windsurfing, kayaking, skin diving, and self-rescue.

Team Building

The program emphasizes teamwork, leadership, and aquatic safety, introducing young people to safe marine and aquatic recreation opportunities.

Additional Information

To ensure a successful and enjoyable experience, participants are encouraged to bring their own wetsuits, fins, surfboards, and body boards each day. The required uniform consists of blue swim trunks, a white T-shirt with the JG logo, a blue sweatshirt with the JG logo, and protective footwear.

Participants should also bring hats, rashguards, sunscreen (SPF 30+), and sunscreen lip balm to protect themselves from the sun. Healthy lunches and plenty of water are recommended, with a focus on waste-free lunches and reusable drink containers.
